“Brave New Words” Addictionary Contest!

To celebrate the launch of “Addictionary: Brave New Words”, Addictionary has challenged Indiebound booksellers and fans alike with a contest to define a “Brave New Word” to add to the general literary and publishing glossary! A great gift for any wordsmith, Addictionary is on the cutting-edge of the English language, staking claims on new linguistic territory with an arch blend of the sharply intellectual and sublimely silly. It collects the best of these neologisms into this handy volume, organized into categories (including technology, politics, dating, sports, religion, and medicine) and cleverly illustrated throughout.

CONTEST PRIZES:

1st Prize—Best new general publishing/literary word wins a framed illustration of their new word by the
Addictionary's illustrator, a special edition of Scrabble, copy of the Addictionary book, customized Addictionary t-shirt, mug and mousepad featuring the new word.

2nd PrizeNine runner-ups will receive a copy of the
Addictionary book and customized Addictionary mug featuring their new word.

WHAT IS ADDICTIONARY?

The first product one would compare it to is the
Urban Dictionary.

They’re both social dictionaries with words submitted by users. The difference lies in the execution of the model. While Urban operates in a horizontal structure, being all things to all people and forever owned by the creators (or the companies who eventually buy them), the
Addictionary is a platform or engine network, as CEO Jim Banister puts it, focused on vertical markets. These engines are then licensed out or sold for companies to include in their product offerings. A big example would be the Political Addictionary which is licensed by Comedy Central for their Indecision 08 campaign.

From a business standpoint, it’s a great model; definitely something that you don’t see in the era of “me-too”s.

WHO'S HARRY N. ABRAMS INC.?

Founded by Harry N. Abrams in 1949,
Harry N. Abrams, Inc. was the first company in the United States to specialize in the creation and distribution of art and illustrated books.
